When I Use Pre Ground Coffee, My Drip Coffee Maker Gets Clogged?

Coffee Talk

It works fine with coffee I ground myself in a mill using the medium/normal setting (in between coarse and fine) but when I use pre-ground coffee, the machine clogs and no coffee drips out. I’ve had the same issue with 2 different machines.
What could I be missing or not doing when using store bought pre-ground coffee that’s causing the machine to clog?

It’s all about getting the correct grind for your coffee maker.

There are quite a few different coffee makers on the market and each one highly depends on the correct grind being used. When a coffee maker basket clogs and you have spillage of coffee grinds or you get coffee grinds in your coffee there is only one answer, you are using the incorrect grind for your coffee maker. If you are using a flat bottom drip coffee maker then you need auto drip grind, if you are using a cone style coffee maker then you need a cone grind. Depending on the quality of the coffee maker and the temperature it brews at also plays a part in your grind. Mainly what happens is folks use coffee that is ground finer than the brew basket requires and you get a mess. There is a wonderful article at Essential Wonders Coffee Company on How To Select The Correct Coffee Grind.

It sounds like the store-bought coffee is too fine. Are you sure you’re buying the drip-coffee grind? It sounds like you’re buying the espresso grind.
