Coffee Talk

Recently I moved from Louisiana to Kentucky. I’ve been craving Community Coffee from Louisiana, so just ordered some. In your opinion, what type of coffee on the market is the best tasting coffee?

Coffee is the second most traded commodity on the globe after oil. So you have plenty to choose from. If your taste goes toward flavored things ( cinnamon gums, lemon flavored water, honey scented candles eg) you have even more options. But I can’t guide you there.
If you are a purist ( candles have to smell of wax, cars have to smell of oil & leather & metal and not strawberry, e.g.) you have options for diluting your coffee with sugars or sweeteners, milk types from condensed to powder to cream to 2% whole milk or drink it black. Now to the temperature: Some like their coffee scalding hot, some luke warm, some with ice. Does a lot of different things to a particular coffee.
Now to the regions: African, Pacific, Central American, Carribean, South American, and South East Asian are the regions which differ in taste, flavor and aroma. BUt most of all it is important to get your coffee FRESH. Not only freshly roasted, but also last seasons green beans, which are not lying forever in various warehouses. MOst coffee you buy from Starbucks or from retail shelves is more than 2 years old.
Also often grounded so you don’t see dirt, twigs, and broken beans mixed in.
My recommendation: Do some research and order from Estate Farms directly. Either from Kona, Hawaii or Puerto Rico or Dominican Republic. Some Costa Rica Farms have websites up and other countries as well. You cut out 3 - 4 middle men and get your stuff from farms directly. And much cheaper. Order whole beans only.
The best tasting coffees have a high reputation, are rare, labor intense and have therefore high prices: Jamaican Blue Mountain, 100% Kona, Yauco Select, Kenyan AAA. But a pound of those yields about 50 -60 cups. Or 20 - 40 mugs. Beats your local coffee shops 3 - 5 bucks per cup.
You can find Kona Coffee farms on the website: http://www.konacoffeefarmers.org. Or learn more at http://www.bluehorsekona.com

My mother-in-law is from Switzerland. When she comes to visit us in California, she brings “Gavina” Espresso. She does not prepare this in a coffee maker, but rather in a filtered-kettle via stovetop.
It is so incredibly bold and rich that I drink it without sugar or cream.

Personally, I like Gevalia. I purchase it through mail order. It’s a bit pricy, but I feel if you’re going to drink coffee, you may as well drink the best and enjoy it.

Peet’s is superb! Java City also is very good. Starbuck’s is hardly better than McDonalds.

The best tasting coffee is the one that you like the most.
My personal preference is Jamaican Blue Mountain and second Hawaiian Kona. These are about $50.00 per pound.
Not the kind of thing most people would want to get into the habit of. When I feel like splurging that’s what I buy.
Otherwise, I like Starbucks Organic Mexican.

There is no best coffee. If you step up into the realm of coffee tasting you will soon realize that the best coffees just differ from each other. For more information you can go here:http://www.sweetmarias.com/
Like wine, spirit, beer, etc everyone may like a kind more than others, but will often wander to try something new once in a while. I like Guatamala myself…or Yirgacheffe…oh I don’t know I always buy something different.
