How Do You Clean Out Mold In The Water Reservoir Of A Coffee Maker?

Coffee Talk

I’ve read the previous 2 Yahoo! Answers on this subject and have this to add:
First of all vinegar only works on the coffee stains.
Second, will bleach or Clorox leach the plastic or ruin the taste of future coffee?
Has anyone tried CLR? What is it?
Or is it time to buy a new one? What did you do?
And how do I prevent this from happening again?

I would try to clean the reservoir with some bleach water and a tooothbrush. Don’t run the bleach water thru the coffee maker , just pour it out over the sink, maybe do this several times. Then follow up with several brewing cycles with plain water just to rinse all thouroughly. You COULD run the solution thru the coffee maker and see if if will affect the plastic as far as taste goes, you’ve got nothing to lose as you can’t use it now with the mold. Vinegar is for the hard water mineral build-up . CLR is for Calcuim , rust and lime. Call the manufacturer or see if they have a website and ask their Customer Service Dept. **Many coffee makers are generally inexpensive, so consider buying a new one. In the future, store the coffee maker with the reservoir door or lid OPEN.

I had some mold start to grow in my reservoir and I just filled it up to the top with water and white vinegar and ran the machine which worked great. If you do run any thing through the machine, make sure you run clean water through it at least twice so the coffee doesn’t change flavor. As for the clr, it gets rid of mineral deposits..which I’ve used in the coffee pot alone…I don’t think I would run it through the machine just because it might damage the plastic inside…I would rather just buy a new cheapy one that costs like 20 bucks so its not a big deal to get another one. If you have a constant mold problem, I would weekly run white vinegar and water though it and leave the top water reservoir flap open after you’re doing using it to air out (every day). :)

CLR is a calcium, lime and rust remover and while it claims to remove mineral deposits in a coffee maker it doesn’t make any claims about mold. I believe you are misinformed about vinegar, though. It will kill and remove mold and bacteria as well as dissolve lime deposits and coffee stains. You can brew a cycle of vinegar through your unit every month or two to keep mineral deposts and mold from ever starting to form.
